80s TV Science Fiction

 

When you start to reel off the list of 80s Science Fiction TV shows - you realise how many there actually were.  Science Fiction TV series are well sought after nowadays - with the SciFi TV channiel airing many current and past television programmes.

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1979-1981).  In this TV Sci-Fi - Buck - played by Gil Gerard - awoke in the late 25th century following a freak mishap with his ship - sending him 500 years into the future.  He finds the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust, and has to fight off the Draconians. Buck soon makes new friends - including a robot called Twiki, and a mechanical brain - Dr Theopolis.

1980 saw the sequel to the late 70s science fiction TV series Battlestar Galactica - Galactica 1980 - in which the crew of the ship finally return to Earth where they must introduce advances in technology to help them kill the Cylons.  Lorne Green starred - but Dirk Benedict did not.

     

Red Dwarf began in the 80s - it ran for 8 seasons from 1988 until 1999.  It's main stars were Craig Charles (who now plays Lloyd in Coronation Street) as Dave Lister, Chris Barrie as Arnold Rimmer, Danny John-Jules as The Cat, and Robert Llewellyn as Kryten.  The story in the science fiction TV comedy followed the adventures of the last human alive after being stranded in space three million years ahead of his time - with his only friends - a hologram, a cat, and a robot.

       

Blake's 7 ran into the early 80s (1978-1981).  Set in the third century of the second calendar, it featured the planet Earth in a destitute state - with a corrupt galactic government drugging it's citizens in order to dissolve their will to fight.  In this science fiction TV show, Roj Blake (Gareth Thomas) was the rebel who had once attempted to lead a resistance group against the federation, was caught and had all his memories taken away.  Blake though, bounced back after witnessing a mass murder by the police that was covered up.  He found an abandoned alien ship and set off with some friends to liberate the worlds controlled by the federation.

ALF (1986-1990) - featuring A.L.F. (an Alien Life Form) - was a comedy science fiction 80s TV show based on the lives of a typical American family, and the effect that a furry creature from outer space could have on them.  The Tanners one day find the small arrogant extraterrestrial after he crashes into their garage.  A.L.F. is from the planet Melmac and has a hunger for the family cat.  The Tanners must must do all they can to stop the neighbours from finding out that they are harbouring an Alien.
